Legislative Work

rally-2training-3 The Floridians Against Fracking Coalition is working to pass a bill to ban oil and gas well-stimulation techniques, commonly referred to as “fracking” statewide in the Florida Legislature. We work to harness grassroots power by coordinating and training Floridians to communicate with their state legislators to advocate for a fracking ban.

The Floridians Against Fracking coalition has grown to over 350 individuals, grassroots organizations, business owners, and local elected officials calling for a statewide fracking ban. We demonstrate our power in numbers to Florida Legislators through a variety of ways including:

– Meeting with state legislators to build support and recruit cosponsors for ban fracking legislation
– Attending legislative committee meetings to speak in support of ban fracking legislation
– Organizing events such as lobby days, rallies, call-in days, and letter-writing parties

Since fracking was used in Southwest Florida in 2013, the Oil and Gas Industry has been working hard to pave the way for more fracking in Florida. In 2013 and 2014, legislation was introduced to allow fracking companies to keep the chemicals they use as trade secret, so the public would not be able to find out what chemicals fracking companies are using in their operations. While the Floridians Against Fracking Coalition formally formed in 2015, these same groups defeated the pro-fracking bills in 2013 and 2014.

The next move from Big Oil and Gas to open up Florida to more dangerous fracking came in 2015 and 2016. Legislation was introduced to set up weak regulations on fracking in Florida. The legislation would have imposed a one year moratorium on fracking and commissioned a poorly designed and underfunded study on how fracking would impact Florida. Floridians Against Fracking fought the legislation and killed the bills by demonstrating that there is already an overwhelming amount of research and science proving fracking to be a disastrous and damaging practice that has no place in the Sunshine State.

In the 2017 legislative session, Florida Power & Light pushed for legislation to allow them to raise their rates and charge their customers for speculative fracking operations in Oklahoma. Floridians Against Fracking successfully worked to defeat this anti-consumer and anti-environmental bill.

In the 2017 and 2018 legislative sessions, Floridians Against Fracking worked to get ban fracking legislation introduced in both the Florida Senate and House with bipartisan support. In the 2018 legislative session, the Senate ban fracking bill was voted on and passed through 2 of its 3 committees with unanimous support.

Floridians Against Fracking is continuing to build support to pass legislation to ban fracking statewide in the 2019 legislative session.
